Summer Reading for Middle School

English Reading Requirements
Students are required to read three books in English from the required reading list on the right and according to their reading level.  A student's reading level is determined by the Star report which is to be included in the final report card mailing.  New students may select any three books in the 4-8 range.

Students are required to write one book report on one of the books AND complete 3x5 index cards for the other books showing author, title, reading level (English), number of pages, and a brief summary.  For the book report, follow the guidelines below for each grade level.

The book report and summary cards must be turned in on the first day of school.

Summary ½ page (50): Brief description of characters and plot.  Detailed description of how the book ended.

Ending Change 1 page (100): Detailed description of how it ends.  Use at least 5 lines of dialogue.  (Remember to put quotation marks around the punctuation, e.g. “.” ) No violence or gory details.

Write a five paragraph essay in which you explain the plot in the first body paragraph, the characters in the second body paragraph and what you learned from reading the book in the last body paragraph.
